Synchaeta triophthalma Lauterborn, 1894

Synchaeta triophthalma; swimming specimen, dorsal view. The most conspicuous trait are the two dark red cerebral eyespots that are connected to two purple frontal eyespots by a stream of purple granules. This species is also characterized by a single (slightly oblique) toe (arrow) with a bulbous lateral antenna (arrowhead, the long sensory cilia are not in focus in this image; see image below). Very fast swimming species. (1)

Synchaeta triophthalma; swimming specimen, ventral view, focal plane on the two purple frontal eyespots and the prominent lateral triangular swellings (arrows). The arrowhead points to the sensory cilia of the lateral antenna at the single toe.(1)

Synchaeta triophthalma; another specimen, focal plane on the sensory cilia of the lateral antenna atf the single toe. Specimens survived 3 days in a plankton sample kept in a regular refrigerator. (2)

Synchaeta triophthalma; encounter of two specimens; the left one carries two! eggs with oblique foot/ toe. (2)

Synchaeta triophthalma; same specimen as the right one in the image above; foot retracted; focal plane on the conspicuous arrangement of the purple pigment granules.(2)
